The Mexico Awareness-Raising Project (MAP), a US Department of Labor-funded project in Mexico, launched in January 2021 to promote information about the 2019 Mexican Labor Reform among workers, employers, and union leaders. As a sub-awardee, SAI worked in partnership with the MAP lead recipient Partners of the Americas (POA) to lead summits, webinars, and technical assistance to raise awareness of these new reforms among automobile, auto parts, aluminum, steel, mining, and electronic industry employers and employer associations in Mexico.

As the project comes to a close, we are proud to reflect on the meaningful work completed by the MAP team, made possible by their dedicated efforts and the many stakeholders committed to improving the lives of workers in Mexico, including:
- 1,341 employers and 19 employer associations trained on the 2019 Labor Reform through 59 hands-on workshops and 20 virtual webinars, focusing on topics such as freedom of association, labor rights, and collective bargaining.
- 5 national summits held to raise awareness among industry stakeholders.
- 12 companies provided technical assistance to improve their adherence to the 2019 labor reform, following their participation in project workshops.
- 38 best practices developed and shared with participants of MAP workshops.
In a follow up workshop held with employers, participants reported making improvements in their operations after attending SAI’s awareness workshops on Mexico’s Labor Reforms, such as:
- Updated and improved labor policies and practices, includingrecruitment policies, policies prohibiting forced labor, overtime and rest-break policies, grievance mechanisms, and elimination of temporary contracts
- Updated and improved collective bargaining policies and procedures, including the implementation of workplace awareness campaign on freedom of association and training for leaders and middle management on respecting the right to freedom of association
- Updated and improved non-discrimination policies and procedures, including the creation or strengthening of committees to prevent and eradicate discrimination, workplace harassment, and violence.
