SAI joined 89 organizations, spearheaded by Fortify Rights, in signing an open letter urging the the Prime Minister of Thailand to dismiss all civil and criminal cases against human rights defenders brought by the Thammakaset poultry company.
Thammakaset’s has filed criminal complaints against former 14 employees for their involvement in reporting labor rights abuses to the Department of Labor Protection and Welfare (DLPW) and the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRCT) in 2016. Both departments have found Thammakaset guilty of labor violations in the past, including failing to pay minimum and overtime wages and failing to provide adequate leave to workers as required by law.
The complaints by Thammakaset appear to be reprisals brought to harass human rights defenders involved in exposing abuses. Such reprisals interfere with the work of human rights defenders and prevent the implementation of labor rights protections.
