Case Study

“The main difference of TenSquared was the great commitment from everybody. We had other projects in the facility which sometimes stopped before they were completed because the staff was not involved and committed to the objectives.”

TenSquared Manager Participant, Bignardi, Brazil

In many cases, improvements to worker health and safety go hand in hand with improved business outcomes. That was certainly the case for Brazilian company, Bignardi.

Bignardi’s TenSquared goal was to ensure 100% compliance with a new procedure for transporting, handling, and storing chemicals. Before TenSquared, chemicals were stored unsafely, with no precautions in case of a leak. The company was also transporting chemicals in an unsafe and inefficient manner, using an open cart that required three workers to navigate.

Upon reviewing existing procedures, the TenSquared team convinced company management to purchase a new, enclosed motorized cart, which is safer and more efficient as it only requires one employee to operate. This new cart saved the company $550 per month (or $6,000 annually) in labor costs. This change also benefited workers. “The physical effort [for workers] was reduced significantly [due to the project],” said one Bignardi worker. “This was one of the most rewarding results for me.”

Other steps the team took to improve chemical safety in the factory included reorganizing the chemical storage procedure, communicating changes to workers, and training workers on new processes.

Having tried other workplace health and safety improvement programs in the past, one Bignardi manager noted: “The main difference of TenSquared was the great commitment from everybody. We had other projects in the facility which sometimes stopped before they were completed because the staff was not involved and committed to the objectives.”
