The Global Living Wage Coalition was founded by a group of standard-setting organizations (including SAI) to establish a common definition of living wage and to promote a common methodology for calculating it. The Coalition defines a living wage as:
The remuneration received for a standard workweek by a worker in a particular place sufficient to afford a decent standard of living for the worker and her or his family. Elements of a decent standard of living include food, water, housing, education, health care, transportation, clothing, and other essential needs including provision for unexpected events.
The common methodology we promote for living wage is the Anker methodology, developed by Richard and Martha Anker. The Coalition has published and continues to release living wage benchmark studies using the Anker methodology for various countries and regions around the world.
